Financial Aid Checklist
Follow these steps to apply for student loans:
1. Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) using GW’s School Code, 001444. Please be advised that the general process takes up to 4-6 weeks. For assistance with the FAFSA, call 1-800-4FED-AID (1-800-433-3242).
Both Entrance Counseling and the MPN need to be completed in order for funds to be disbursed to your student account with GW.
3. Complete the Graduate Loan Questionnaire once you have registered for classes. The Graduate Loan Questionnaire is a supplemental document for graduate students applying for loans at GW and must be submitted each time a Federal Direct Unsubsidized Loan, Federal Direct Graduate PLUS Loan or private alternative loan is requested. Learn more about financial aid at GW.
4. Evaluate your need for additional funding, such as the Federal Direct Graduate PLUS Loan through the Department of Education, or a private alternative loan through the bank or lender of your choice. To help you determine your loan eligibility, calculate an estimate of your cost of attendance.
Keep in mind that the Federal Direct Graduate PLUS and private alternative loans are credit-based programs and you must meet the Department of Education’s or the private alternative loan provider’s credit criteria to utilize funds under these programs. You may review your credit report by contacting any of the following credit bureaus: Experian, Equifax or TransUnion.
5. If you have exhausted the maximum in the Federal Direct Unsubsidized Loan for the academic year, you may apply for the Federal Direct Graduate PLUS loan and Master Promissory Note.
If approved for the Federal Direct Graduate PLUS Loan, complete a separate Federal Direct Graduate PLUS Master Promissory Note for this loan.
If declined for the Direct Graduate PLUS Loan, you may add an endorser (co-signer) to your loan request or appeal the denial through the Department of Education.
