I did my practicum with a local state senator at the Michigan State Capitol in Lansing, Michigan.
What skills did you gain during your practicum?
I did a lot of research, got a firsthand look at public health and I learned how to go about getting a grant to improve the area in which I live. I live in a rural area, and there are no bike paths or walkways for activity close to home. I started by asking the local development board of my city if there was funding available, and then I had to devise a plan for voter approval.
How did you apply the skills you gained during your practicum to your current job?
I currently work with the public, so my experience reinforced the skills I already use and provided a few new opportunities to expand and improve my community.
What was your favorite aspect of your practicum experience?
I enjoyed being able to learn from other public officials and hear more about their perspective and plans for the communities they represent.
What was your experience like working with your preceptor?
My preceptor was awesome. He is very relaxed and humble. He understands education and is motivated to help students learn. His guidance and opinions were greatly appreciated, and his perspective on public health and the needs of the community were unique. He truly understands his communities.
Would you like to pursue a career with an organization similar to your practicum site?
I would like to make a difference in peoples’ lives, so I would consider putting myself in a position to represent several communities in the state.
